In a rousing kick off of the MARS Winter Freeze Late Model season, the I Got Gas Racing
team rolled into town and completely dominated the action this past Monday evening at the
Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The event saw some great racing, some controversy and some
confusion as well, as IGGR won every race event on the evening's slate including a bunch of
second and third place finishes to boot.
IGGR_Gas once again stood up to the challenge of greatness and blew away a talented field
of drivers with a Kleen Sweep in his Heat race, the Dash 4 Cash and victories in both A-Mains.
Gas also collected the fastest 30 lap 'TRT' ever recorded at LV Motor Speedway with an out of
this world 6:12.42. In addition to Gas' fine performance, teammate IGGR_Pa won both B-Mains
including an awesome come from behind battle with WFO Rain in the second 30 lap B-Main.
The IGGR onslaught did not stop with the A & B Mains as IGGR_Dawg and IGGR_Noles each picked
up a victory apiece in the C-Mains. All in all, it was a sparkling performance by a Racing Team
that came to race and refused to lose!
HEATS
IGGR_Gas took the honors in Heat #1 sparked by a an outstanding Hotlap of 12.33. Newcomer
SOFTSHOE captured secondplace with a brilliant performance that saw him race from his 8th
place starting position that enabled him to secure an automatic spot in The Show. Warp seemed
play a big part in this heat as one of the race favorites , IGGR_Coal, seemed to be lagged out of
contention almost immediately.
Heat #2 was all EVR_Mudthang and IGGR speedster Mach8 as both racers pulled away from the
fieldand copped first and second respectively. Mudthang clocked an awesome 12.31 while Mach8
chipped in with a very quick 12.36. IGGR_Hayes and SCH went 1 and 2 in Heat #3 and rounded
out the first 6 racers destined for the Dash 4 Cash.
D-MAINS
MoFo Dom finished first in this race with WFO Rain second but warp once again confused the outcome
of the race. While running in the lead, EVR_Gerb was lagged to the back of the pack but was later
offered and accepted a provisional that allowed him to rightfully advance to a position in the A-Main.
Heat #2 witnessed IGGR_Sidespin race to a convincing victory that earned him a spot in the Feature
event.
B-MAINS
Both of the MARS B-Mains at Las Vegas Speedway went to IGGR_Pa but neither victory was a cakewalk.
The veteran DTR2 racer needed some nifty work and late-lap heroics to win two titanic battles with WFO Rain.
Rain had led 47 of the 60 B-Main laps but tire wear proved to be his undoing in both events. The two racers
fought eachother hard and clean throughout much of the evenings' action with some classic side-by-side action.
The top Hotlap of the B-Mains was clocked in by EVR_Perd with 12.32 followed by IGGR_RCR with an excellent
12.34 and Pa turned in a fine 12.36.
C-MAINS
In C-Main action, IGGR_Dawg took the first Twin30 and IGGR_Noles went to Victory Lane in the second Twin30.
The double-dip wins in the C-Mains gave the IGGR race team a Kleen sweep in all the run throughout the evening.
IGGR_64 timed the fastest Hotlap in the C-Mains with a fine 12.38.
THE SHOW
The starting order for Las Vegas Speedway A-Main Twin30 #1:
1. IGGR_Gas 2. IGGR_Mach8
3. SoftShoe 4. SCH
5. IGGR_Hayes 6. MoFo Dom
7. IGGR_Side 8. EVR_Gerb
The MARS Las Vegas A-Main #1 was a clean and well driven affair that was hi-lited by some fine
racing mini-dramas throughout the field. But in the end, it was the Gasman who prevailed. Once
he got the lead and some racing room, he showed why he is the fastest racer in the game by nailing
his spots lap after lap after lap.
As the green flag dropped, Mach8 surprised Gas with a nifty move down under that allowed him to take
the early lead on lap 1. It is a lead he would not relinguish until the start of lap 4 when Gas took first place
with clean pass and that was the end of that!! Inspite of the early duel with Mach8, Gas still managed to run
the fastest average lap of the night and he also chipped in with an outstanding Hotlap of 12.33.
Behind the leader there were excellent battles going on between Mach and Dom, then Dom and Sidespin and
IGGR_Hayes and EVR_Gerb. Each of these hard fought pairings were a symphony of grace and power with
all drivers performing on the highest level of professionalism.
Final race order of the Las Vegas A-Maim Twin30 #1:
Gas FL 12.33 'TRT' 6:12.42
Mach8---Sidespin---Dom---Hayes---Gerb---SCH---SoftShoe
A-MAIN TWIN30 #2
A-Main #2 at the Las Vegas Twin30 can best be summed up by what occurred on lap 3 in turns 3 and 4.
With Sidespin and Mofo Dom running 1 & 2, IGGR_Gas nailed a hole-shot the width of a bowling alley
and hit nothing but air as he took the lead and rolled to another impressive win. To pull off that kind of
move against two outstanding racers like Side and Dom, is truely remarkable.
Beyond Gas's performance was the efforts of MoFo Dom. The cocky youngster from Oregon gave the Gasman
a glimpse into the future as he refused to give up the chase. With the help of the Fastest Hotlap of the
evening at 12.30, Dom did not fall off Gas's torrid pace until around lap 25.
Behind that battle was perhaps the finest two-car racing I have ever seen in a MARS Late Model Final.
Similar to the struggle between Dom and Mojo at Breakneck this past Freaky Fall, IGGR_Sidespin and
IGGR_Mach8 lit up the Vegas night with a 27 lap battle that defies this reporter's ability to discribe it. Bumper
to bumper or side by side, these two great racers shared barely a ding or two between them as Sidespin
prevailed at the Finishline by less than a car length. A 4-star performance by both drivers.
Final race order of the Las Vegas A-Main Twin30 #2:
Gas FL 12.34 'TRT' 6:13.45
Dom---Sidespin---Mach8---SoftShoe---SCH---Gerb---Hayes
EDITORIAL: DASH 4 CASH at Las Vegas Speedway
Some controvercy did emerge here in the Dash 4 Cash race that sets the first 6 places in The Show. It
involved the Freaky Fall Points Champion EVR_Mudthang, and is therefore worth mentioning.
The race began with Gas taking the early lead and Mudthang glued to his rear bumper and for 3 1/2 laps
these two great racers put on a show as neither could break away from the other. Then coming out of turn
#2, Gas went high to the wall and Mud went mid-track to set up a pass in the next corner. Following behind
in 3rd place was IGGR flash Johnny Hayes, who inturn, tried to get under Mud down the stretch. The three
racers streaked for turn #3 diagonally 3 wide and something had to give. Hayes was in an awkward position
to make the turn and started to lift but unfortunately not enough and clipped Mudthang's rear panel as he
entered the corner. A melee ensued and hard feelings took center stage.
Editorially, I am obliged to tell the truth otherwise I'm just putting captions on a cartoon. The natural flow of
this icident put Hayes in a tuff spot and he knew it but he just couldn't lift in time to avoid the accident. My good
bud and teammate Mudthang was also wrong for not continuing---But pray-tell, when was the last time you
heard a great racer say thank you for being taken out particularly when he's in a death grip of a race with
the great Gasman. He was naturally dissapointed and that's easy for any racer to understand.
The rivalry between EVR and IGGR is the mainstay of DTR2. It is essential that it remains competitive and
more importantly, healthy. It was a racing accident and I for one, I am looking forward to seeing another
replay involving these two giants battling it out again!! Enuff said except to ask, what will tomorrow bring?
